How to Setup & Change Your Jurisdiction

In this video, we’ll guide you through setting up and changing your jurisdiction in Legal Sherpa, a critical step to ensure you get the most accurate legal guidance.

The U.S. legal system operates like a game, where each jurisdiction—federal, state, county, territory, or city—has its own unique set of laws and rules. By adjusting your jurisdiction in Legal Sherpa, you align the platform’s guidance to the specific laws relevant to your location.

Legal Sherpa supports various jurisdictions, including federal, all 50 states, and over 3,200 counties and U.S. territories, providing comprehensive coverage for nationwide civil, criminal, and equity matters.

In our first example, we’ll walk through the process for a new member in Tampa, Florida. Upon registration, you’ll enter your jurisdiction by selecting your state, county, and city—Florida, Hillsborough County, and Tampa, respectively. When you ask, “What are my rights as a tenant?” Legal Sherpa will provide guidance tailored explicitly to Tampa’s laws and statutes.

The second example demonstrates how to change your jurisdiction. Suppose you want to know your tenant rights in New York City. By clicking the gear icon, you can update your jurisdiction to New York, New York County, and New York City. After entering the same legal question, Legal Sherpa adjusts its guidance to reflect the specific laws in New York City.

This straightforward process ensures that no matter your legal issue—civil, criminal, or otherwise—Legal Sherpa delivers accurate legal insights customized to your jurisdiction.
